Matthias Wollgast

With the Wild Freshness of Limes
15 January – 27 February 2016

Galerie Rupert Pfab is pleased to present new works by the Düsseldorf-based artist Matthias Wollgast (*1981) within the frameworks of a solo exhibition.

The dependency of art on its respective context and, with this, the constant reassessment of cultural values through its history and reception, is a central theme in the works of Matthias Wollgast. A single motif can appear in the form of a camera-less photograph, its reproduction on a postcard, within the frameworks of an artist’s book, or as an integral component within an installation. Wollgast’s works are continuously generated out of new contexts, make references to each other, become condensed, and are placed in ever new interrelationships.

Wollgast plays with a large number of historical references, both thematically and formally. His works from the “figures” series, for example, appear at first glance to be illustrations of well-known sculptures by Constantin Brâncuşi, Umberto Boccioni, Bruce Nauman, and Paul McCarthy. In fact, however, he constructs these images as contact prints from handmade negatives comprised of transparent film, graphite, and spray paint. The initially black-and-white results and then coloured by hand. In a similar way, Wollgast’s recent photographs make reference to the early years of the medium. At the same time, however, their appearance is also reminiscent of the results of a rendering, i.e. a camera-less photograph in the sense of digital image simulation.

Matthias Wollgast was born in Siegburg. After completing his studies at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf, he went to get a post-graduate degree from the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. His works have been presented in group shows at, among other places, Goldsmiths College in London (2010) and the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn (2011). Solo exhibitions have been presented in the Baustelle Schaustelle in Essen (2010), the Schmela Haus (Kunstsammlung NRW) in Düsseldorf (2015), the Maschinenhaus in Essen (2015), and the Parkhaus im Malkasten in Düsseldorf (2015). In 2016, a solo exhibition is being organised by the Paul Clemen Museum in Bonn.

Matthias Wollgast has received various grants and awards, including the 69th International Bergischer Art Prize (2015), an international fellowship from the Cultural Department of the City of Düsseldorf (2013), and the Audi Art Award for New Photography (2012). In 2010, he was honoured with the Baustelle Schaustelle Essen Art Award.
